I was reading old articles about Hatsune Miku earlier and a lot of journalist boomers who are completely unfamiliar with the concept of a vocalsynth or otaku culture seem to view her as this 1984 AI dystopia thing that will replace human singers.

What's the best way to explain Vocaloid to a person like this?.

 No.541

The way I explain it is that it is just an instrument like any other. Some people like it, others don't. The people that use it to make music don't impede on human singers and songwriters, it's just two ways of doing things. Proof of that is in them being distrustful of it/not liking it. There are other people that think the same way, and many of those people will continue to make music the 'normal' way.

When talking to a producer/music nerd etc. with a bit of pre-existing DTM knowledge: "It's a vocal VST with (usually) anime mascots that was created/developed in Spain but got popularized and became a huge subculture in Japan."

When talking to a total normie: Something along the lines of "It's a software that makes vocals for music producers.", nowadays I'd add also a little part where I clarify it's ethical and also predated the AI boom by like a decade since people probably will (sadly) mix it up with things like non-consensual SVCs and GANs/diffusion models.

If they like any artists that have history in the Vocaloid scene (for example if they like Chainsaw Man I'd mention Syudou and Kenshi Yonezu made songs for the OST, maybe also Inabacumori since they blew up on TikTok iirc)
If they like VTubers I could mention the parallels between VTer culture and Vocaloid too.

I hate when people overcomplicate others' first introduction to Vocaloid, even weebs themselves might not be as interested in the software or non-Crypton related sides of Vocaloid so there's really no need to mention it until they express interest. I once saw someone say they'd use the term "concatenative synthesis" when introducing someone to Vocaloid completely unironically..

>created/developed in Spain
Ole!

 No.547

my explanations have usually been "it lets someone who can't sing or afford to hire a singer add vocals to a song" for voice synths, and usually mention the quality difference
this was before machine learning voice banks though - using voicevox has felt like I have singing spirits trapped in my computer and I am forcing them to my will lol, the voice quality is really high

really though, we will probably absolutely see long dead vocalists revived by the labels that own their back catalog, so the journalists might be right in part…
but it absolutely won't be Miku's fault

They actually have done this with Vocaloid already, before AI was a thing

Yeah they even resurrected Hibari Misora with AI as far back as the VOCALOID3 era, way before the Spongebob cover meme people.
Although it was done with consent from the families (wasn't Ueki-loid commissioned, actually?) so I don't think it's that bad imo.

What the fuck

Didn't even notice that LOL
Ironically I think they used the same or similar software in V6, I'm dying to know why it sounds so fuckin' bad in comparison

Because vocaloid6 is flat and inexpressive as fuck lol
