Kit-Kats are considered lucky in Japan. The Japanese pronunciation of KitKat (kitto-katsu) sounds exactly like the Japanese words "kitto katsu", where kitto means "for sure, definitely" and "katsu" means to "to win, to succeed."

So giving someone a KitKat is wishing them success, and so they're often given before exams, tests etc
